The Monkey King Fire Edition: Collector's Guide

Quick Answer

The Monkey King - Fire Edition is a rare 2008 vinyl art toy from Munky King, created with artist Nathan Jurevicius. If you collect limited-edition designer toys or are a fan of Jurevicius's work, this piece is worth serious consideration.

Why the Fire Edition Stands Out

The Fire Edition is not just another colorway. It was originally designed for an MTV Asia animation project, giving it a unique backstory that resonates with fans of both art toys and animation.

With only 150 pieces made, scarcity is a key factor. This low edition size means it's unlikely to be widely available, so acting quickly is important if you want one.

The collaboration between Nathan Jurevicius and Munky King, with expert sculpting by Dave Pressler, adds a layer of artistic credibility that many collectors value.

Material and Size Considerations

The Fire Edition is made of vinyl and stands 8 inches tall. This is a substantial size for a designer toy, making it a good centerpiece for a shelf or display case.

Vinyl is durable but not indestructible. It can be sensitive to extreme heat and prolonged sunlight, which can cause warping or fading. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Because it's an older piece from 2008, the vinyl may have aged. Check for any discoloration or stickiness, which can happen with older vinyl figures, before purchasing second-hand.

Price and Value Considerations

The catalog price is USD 54.40, with a comparison price of USD 80.00. This suggests a discount from the original retail, but remember that market prices for limited editions can vary widely.

Given the low edition size, the resale value could be higher than the catalog price. However, values fluctuate based on demand and condition, so don't treat this as an investment guarantee.

If you're buying from a reseller, compare prices across platforms to ensure you're getting a fair deal. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, as they might indicate a counterfeit.

Authenticity and Condition Checks

Because of its rarity, counterfeits exist. Always ask for proof of purchase or original packaging to verify authenticity.

Check the edition number and any markings on the figure. Authentic pieces from Munky King typically have clear branding and edition details.

If buying online, request additional photos from different angles to inspect for damage or wear.

Decision Rules

• Edition size check: Confirm the edition number is within the 150-piece run. If it's not numbered or the number seems off, question its authenticity. Always ask for the edition number before purchasing.
• Condition assessment: Inspect for yellowing, stickiness, or damage. Older vinyl can degrade, so factor in restoration costs if needed. Request detailed photos if buying online.
• Price comparison: Compare the catalog price of USD 54.40 with current market listings. If reseller prices are significantly higher, consider whether the premium is justified by condition and rarity. Set a budget and stick to it.
